Cosmetics in Australia are unregulated in respect of any product standards; however the labelling of cosmetics is regulated and requires ingredient listing. Claims are subject to the Trade Practices Act and/or TGA advertising guidelines. Many possible claims would render the product a Therapeutic and therefore require the product to be registered with full technical portfolio of data and efficacy information as per any OTC medicine. The CTFAA Code of Good Manufacturing Practice prescribes a number of microbiological standards for cosmetics, ingredients and process water.
