Melamine

In response to international concerns, Silliker testing centres of excellence in France, Netherlands, Canada and Spain provide expert testing services for melamine.

In 2007, melamine – a toxic chemical typically used in formulating plastics and fertilizers – was first identified in pet foods that sickened and killed cats and dogs in the United States. The source of the melamine contamination was eventually traced to China. More recently, the toxic substance was found in Chinese infant formula that sickened several thousand babies.

Employing GC/MS and LC-MS/MS validated methods, our testing services cover a host of matrices including:

• Wheat gluten, rice protein, corn gluten, and soy protein
• Hydrolyzed proteins, amino acids, wet and dry pet foods
• Dry animal feeds, infant formula, dairy products (e.g., milk powder, ice-cream, yogurt, and whey powder
• Milk based foods (e.g., milk powder, milk chocolate, whey powder, and infant formula)

We also provide expert analysis for cyanuric acid, ammeline, and ammelide using GC/MS technology.
