Stringent and volatile export regulations for aflatoxins are causing pangs of uncertainty for many U.S. nut producers. Do you have the utmost confidence in your aflatoxin testing results? Are you up-to-date on the most current export directives?
If you're unsure, we can assist you. Our Modesto, CA, testing facility is one stage away from becoming a United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved laboratory for almonds.
Currently, the Modesto lab is among a select number of laboratories nationwide that are seeking accreditation to the program, which was launched by the agency last year. Under the six-stage accreditation process, applicant laboratories must:
Demonstrate SOPs for quality assurance and quality control
Have appropriate grinding equipment
Demonstrate analytical competence at low limits of detection
Provide documentation and training for analytical personnel
Analyze check-samples with known and unknown levels of aflatoxin
Pass an intensive on-site inspection

Upon successful completion, recognized laboratories will be certified to issue Voluntary Aflatoxin Sampling Program (VASP) certificates with analytical results. As you know, many European Union countries will not accept U.S. almond shipments that are not accompanied by VASP certificates from testing labs.
We hope to complete the final stage of the USDA program soon. Please log on to the California Almond Board website at www.almondboard.com to stay abreast of our progress.
