4-methylbenzophenone Testing Services

The recent discovery of 4-methylbenzophenone in cereal has led some European Union member states to withdraw products from the market. According to safety authorities, the contamination was caused by the migration of 4-methylbenzophenone, a component of ink used in the food packaging, from the surface of cardboard boxes.  While the  European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded the molecule offers limited human risk, the organization stated “further data and analysis is needed to fully assess” the safety of 4-methylbenzophenone.

Employing LC-MS/MS technology, Silliker Netherlands B.V. offers expert detection services for 4-methylbenzophenone in cereal products, milk products, and packaging materials. Rush services are available and other food matrices may be tested on request. Limits of detection for known food matrices and known packaging matrices are 10 ppb (10microgram/kg) and 1 ppm (1 milligram/kg), respectively.
